How to Store Peptides Correctly — Complete 2026 Temperature Guide
Correct storage is one of the most overlooked aspects of working with research peptides. Peptides are biological compounds — they degrade in response to heat, light, moisture and pH changes. Improper storage can significantly reduce potency, shorten shelf life and waste money. This guide covers everything you need to know.
❄️ Core Rule: Lyophilized (freeze-dried) peptide powder — store at 2–8°C refrigerated or freeze for long term. Reconstituted peptide solution — refrigerate at 2–8°C only, never freeze. Both — always protect from light.
Understanding Peptide Degradation
Before discussing storage conditions, it helps to understand what causes peptide degradation. Peptides are chains of amino acids held together by peptide bonds. Several factors can break these bonds or alter the structure:
- Heat: Elevated temperatures accelerate chemical reactions including hydrolysis (bond-breaking with water). At room temperature, peptide degradation is measurably faster than at refrigeration temperatures
- Light (UV): UV radiation provides energy that can break molecular bonds. Some peptides are more photosensitive than others — GHK-CU copper peptide and Epitalon are among the more light-sensitive compounds
- Moisture: Lyophilized peptides are moisture-free by design. Any moisture that enters the vial can initiate degradation reactions
- Oxygen: Oxidation can alter peptide structure, particularly for compounds containing cysteine residues
- Freeze-thaw cycles: Repeatedly freezing and thawing a reconstituted solution causes ice crystal formation that can physically damage peptide molecules
Storage by Peptide Form
Lyophilized Powder (How PEPTARA Ships All Products)
Short-term (up to 6 months): Refrigerate at 2–8°C (36–46°F)
Long-term (6+ months): Freeze at -20°C (-4°F)
Light protection: Keep in original vial, away from direct light
Lyophilized peptide powder is the most stable form. Properly stored lyophilized peptides can remain potent for 2+ years when frozen and 6–12 months when refrigerated. PEPTARA ships all products in lyophilized form specifically because it maximises stability during transit and storage.
Reconstituted Peptide Solution
Storage location: Refrigerate at 2–8°C — do NOT freeze
Duration: 30–60 days depending on peptide
Light: Protect from light — medicine cabinet drawer is ideal
Once reconstituted with bacteriostatic water, peptide solutions should never be frozen. The ice crystal formation during freezing physically damages the peptide structure. The 0.9% benzyl alcohol in BAC water inhibits bacterial growth for 30–60 days when refrigerated — this is why bacteriostatic water is essential rather than plain sterile water.

How PEPTARA Ensures Your Peptides Arrive Correctly Stored
Every order from PEPTARA Health ships with pharmaceutical-grade cold packs designed to maintain 2–8°C throughout transit. Our packaging keeps products at the correct temperature for up to 96 hours in transit — well within the delivery window for any US domestic order. For international orders, we use upgraded cold packaging with extended duration cold packs.
On receipt, refrigerate your peptides immediately. If for any reason your cold packs have fully melted and the vials feel warm to the touch, contact us at (704) 605-9477 with a photo — we will reship at no charge.
What to Do If Your Peptides Were Left Out
If lyophilized peptide powder was accidentally left at room temperature for a short period (under 24 hours), potency is likely largely maintained. Peptides in lyophilized form are more resistant to short-term temperature excursions than reconstituted solutions.
If reconstituted peptide solution was left at room temperature for more than 4–6 hours, discard it. Reconstituted solutions degrade faster at room temperature and the risk of bacterial growth increases significantly without refrigeration.
